Filipino lawyer hailed SE Asia Young Lawyer of the Year
A Filipino lawyer won the Southeast Asia Young Lawyer of the Year in the 13th Asian Legal Business Law Awards Thursday night for his service in bringing legal assistance to Filipinos in the UAE.
Atty. Barney Almazar, who now lives in Dubai and works as a director at Gulf Law Consultancy, bested more than 450 other nominees at the awarding ceremony held at The St. Regis Singapore.
He shared his feelings upon winning the award in a Facebook post. “I was so overwhelmed that I was only able to say a one liner acceptance,” he said.
For Almazar, the award is something he considers to be “very special for two reasons.”
“The first is that it is given as a recognition of the next generation of lawyers who lives and works in a much different environment as it was before, where the real action happens not in the court or corporate boardroom but in the streets and homes where people live and engage the communities,” he said.
“Second, because it is a challenge for us young lawyers to ensure that the legal profession is not just a career path but a responsible and accountable vocation to care for the lives of everyone and not just a few,” Almazar added.
The annual Asian Legal Business Law Awards aims to bring together the elites from different sectors of the legal profession and to celebrate the excellence of the legal field.
The young lawyer has been devoting his practice to bringing foreign investments to the Philippines and promoting our very own brands to the Middle East to create more jobs in the country.
For Almazar, this is his way of challenging the norm in the Philippines “where human labor is considered as a ‘commodity’ for export” or something that can be bought or sold.
But despite the title he won, he believes success in the practice of law is not just about making successful deals with clients, but about maximizing it to democratize wealth while defending social justice.
“I thank Asian Legal Business for this award and I share this with the countless Filipinos abroad,” Almazar said.
