POEA warns OFWs in UAE against sex out of wedlock
The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) reminded overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the UAE that having sex out of wedlock is punishable by imprisonment and deportation.
According to the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai, some Filipino couples are currently detained for having sex out of wedlock or living under the same roof without the bond of marriage.
They added that they received requests for repatriation from Filipinos based on northern parts of UAE and Dubai who had a child out of wedlock.
The report said the Philippine government is hoping to negotiate with the Dubai Immigration to repatriate the Filipinos who were caught doing such acts without serving jail terms.
The Filipino Times previously reported that illegal affairs and sex out of wedlock are among the top issues faced by the OFW community in the UAE.
Att. Barney Almazar, a licensed legal consultant in the UAE and a partner at Gulf Law, called on Filipino couples who are both single to get married before engaging in an intimate relationship.
“They are perhaps unaware that there are things we can do in the Philippines that we cannot do here since there are differences in the Philippine and UAE laws,” Gulf News quoted Almazar as saying.
Under the Sharia Law of UAE, it is illegal for a couple to live together out of wedlock. If found guilty, a couple might face six months in prison or deportation.
Getting pregnant and bearing a child out of wedlock is also considered a crime in UAE that could slap locals and expats alike with six months in prison, deportation, and even a ban in the country.
